Abstract

Blood donation constitutes an essential humanitarian parctice conducted voluntarily and without coercion, providing a critical source of blood for patients requiring transfusion. Despite its humanitarian nature, blood donation requires a rigorous screening process to ensure that prospective donors meet established eligibility criteria. This screening is essential to maintain the quality and safety of donated blood and to minimize the risk of transfusion-transmitted infection and other adverse health outcome in recipients. This article aims to examine the principles governing safe and appropriate blood donation practices and to analyze appropriate approaches to communicating donor deferral decisions while respecting human rights. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method through a review of relevant literature, books, and applicable laws and regulations. The finding indicate that blood donation should be conducted in accordance with the principle of humanity, safety, and respect for the rights of both donors and blood recipients. Only individuals who fulfill the established health and eligibility criteria should be permitted to donate blood. In cases of permanent donor deferral, the decision should be communicated clearly, respectfully, and transparently, while ensuring that the donor’s human rights and dignity are upheld.
